What is Fiber Optic Internet?
Fiber optic Internet is also known as “Fiber”. What makes it special is that it’s delivered to your home using a Fiber optic cable (thin glass-like cables with higher resistance to interference and Data travels through them as beams of light pulsed in a pattern).
This type of cable has very strong signals and transmits data at rapid speeds about 20 times faster than regular cable at 1 Gbps. This type of internet is called Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH).

You can connect various devices to your WiFi including smartphones, smart TVs, laptops, desktops, e-book readers, and gaming devices (PlayStation, Xbox), among other internet-enabled devices.
What is the Difference between WakaNet PRO and WakaNet MAX?
MTN WakaNet Pro delivers internet connectivity to your home using a fiber optic cable, whereas MTN WakaNet Max delivers internet connectivity to your home via a wireless (mode of internet delivery) connection on the MTN 4G network.
WakaNet Internet Pacakages
There are 3 categories that fall in the MTN WakaNet internet family. WakaNet MAX, WakaNet PRO, 4G WakaNet MiFi.
1. MTN WakaNet MAX
A fast and reliable home internet to power your entertainment (Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube), gaming (Twitch), e-learning, home office (Zoom virtual meetings), and security surveillance needs. This package comes with a free 4G Wi-Fi router, free 4G SIM card, and 40GB initial package for UGX 245,000 connecting upto 32 devices.
2. MTN WakaNet PRO
A fixed Home Internet solution delivered using fiber optic cable directly to your home. It provides a reliable high-speed internet connection with no cap on data volume. Note that this package does not use a SIM card.
3. 4G WakaNet MiFi — WakaNet now in your Pocket
A pocket-size 4G WakaNet MiFi preloaded with 15GB of free (freedom bundle) no expiry data bundle, for only UGX 75,000/- connecting up to 10 devices. If you are interested in this, feel free to visit any MTN Service Centre or Banana Phone World outlet.

How to Install the MTN WakaNet Pro Package
Step 1: Download MyMTN App for Android or Apple (iOS) iPhone
MTN WakaNet Pro Home Internet Solution MyMTN App
MyMTN App is an all in one self-care app that gives you full control in managing your MTN account, monitor your data usage patterns, top up airtime, purchase data bundles, pay your bills (Electricity, ), and subscribe to other MTN products and Services on the go.
MyMTN App is free. Simply download it from the Play Store or Apple Store depending on your OS. It acts as a knowledge base for MTN’s product portfolio. MyMTN is for all MTN customers both pre-paid and post-paid.
If it’s the first time to install the app, you will be required to select your country, enter your MTN mobile number, then verify (authenticate) with an OTP code sent to you phone.
Tip: Register with MTN Mobile Money (Payment for WakaNet Pro is made via the MyMTN mobile app which you can find in your app store).

Step 2: Initiate the MTN WakaNet Pro Purchase and Request Service
MTN WakaNet Pro Service Request — Choose WakaNet PRO
Tap on the ‘Buy’ button on the home screen of the MyMTN app and select WakaNet Pro. Be sure to read through the ‘About Service’ then tap on the ‘Proceed’ button to proceed to requesting the MyMTN WakaNet Pro service.
Step 3: Select your Location and Self-Service Sales Agent

Make sure your phone GPS is enabled for this step to enable the MyMTN app to capture the right location coordinates.
Then select your location in the drop down. If your location is not visible, that probably means that it’s not eligible for the MTN WakaNet PRO yet. Otherwise, select your region and a sales agent, follow the prompts to request for the service.
This sales agent will work with you and come to your place to take a feasibility study that confirms that the MTN WakaNet Internet (Fiber to Home) service is available in your area.
Step 4: Choose your Package and Confirm your Service Request

The MTN WakaNet Pro has 2 packages: The Standard package with maximum sppeds of 20Mbps and Premium package of 40Mbps. But as usual, there is something called Fair Usage Policy (FUP) which you can read more about in our last post about the Best Unlimited Data Bundles in Uganda and Cheapest Internet Packages in Uganda.
Any ways, once the FUP is implemented, the maximum speeds to as low as 12Mbps on the Standard package and 24Mbps on the Premium package. While peer-to-peer applications such as torrent applications are limited to 1Mbps on the Standard package and 2Mbps on the Premium packages.
Step 5: Complete the Feasibility Study and Pay Activation Fees
MTN WakaNet Pro Service Request Received — Success
Sit tight. Wait for a message that includes a link to pay the Activation fees. This will happen after the feasibility is completed. Once you have completed the first 4 steps, you will receive a success message or notification indicating that your request for the MTN WakaNet Pro service has been received.
Next, a team will come to your area to carry out further checks to confirm the service can be delivered to your specified address.
You will be tempted to tap on ‘Pay Activation Fee’ but not yet. As I said, Sit tight. And wait for another message from MTN that included a link to pay the activation fee.
The Activation fee (installation fee) for both WakaNet PRO packages (MTN Home Fiber Internet) is UGX100,000 and all payments are made using MTN mobile money on MyMTN app.
